A Day Off

Enjoying a day off together are Brian Worcester, Rod Dorland and Keith Anderson. Brian still toils as a pharmacist in Spokane. Rod is an active Chiropractor and Keith has retired after 20 years as a counselor at AHS.

In Memoriam, Jim Maris

We have learned that Jim Maris passed away on December 29, 2008. Jim was in our class through his Sophomore year but graduated elsewhere.

Daryl Compton, Retired

This familiar face is very active on FaceBook.com so you can connect with him there. He's in Puyallup now that he has retired from the daily grind. I'm going to guess that his lot has a nice view of Mt. Rainier. Nice landing Daryl!

Dwight Dawson actually bought his first motorcycle from Terry in 1964...a Honda 55! While brother David was in the Army, Dwight traded his car for the bike...without his knowledge.

Brain Worcester

These are some pics taken last month during the Arts and Crafts Show. The good lookin' kid with me is my baby boy, Chad (now 38 years old). We were on some beach on San Juan Island. The two old dames on the couch with my granddaughter Alexis (Lexy) are my sisters, Suzy and Marcia.

This picture was taken in Las Vegas, where Bill lives now. I don't remember which restaurant they were at. I think this was taken in June. From left Brent Gilhousen, Sandra (King) Gilhousen, Bill Baxter, and Leilani Baxter. Brent and Sandra live in California and as I understand it Brent is trying to, at least, semi-retire. Bill is retired, but his wife still works as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines. I try to get down to see Bill about every 3 months.

Oil is a Renewable Resource

Oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico are being refilled with oil coming up from below the current oil fields. Russia has drilled over 400 eight mile deep wells into the Earth’s granite crust. This has worked so well that they worked in Vietnam and found oil off its coast where everyone said there was no oil. Oil used to be found in sedimentary rock at 2-3 miles deep, but the Russians found a new source.
What is happening? The Russians found that new oil was being made from hot molten rock called magma heating the basement rocks of the Earth’s crust. As the rocks are heated methane gas is distilled. This combines with carbonates and carbon 14 that occur naturally in rock, when these are mixed together, they form oil. It’s called Abiotc (non biological) because it does not come from vegetable matter.
The original theory of how oil was formed is that swamps filled with vegetation, (biomass) were covered with mud (called sedimentary rock once it hardened) and decayed over millions of years into coal or crude oil. This is called the Biotic Theory.
Oil is a renewable resource because it is being made today deep in the earth’s crust. We do not have an energy crisis we have a leadership crisis. One group says we are running out of energy so we have to cut back all that we do and will not allow us to drill for the new oil. This new group says we have plenty of oil, let us drill for it and use it. Write or call you congressmen and tell them your views. They are already feeling the heat from voters, keep the pressure on.

Darel Oson's Daughter and Grandson

Hello Dwight, I am Darel's daughter, and coincidentally, I live outside of Houston in The Woodlands! I read your tribute to Dad on Rill's website and noticed you went to high school with him. I loved seeing his high school photo and saved it to my computer! I am trying to get some information for a scrapbook and wondered if you could help me. Before Dad became ill,we had a brief discussion about him running track in school and what some of his events/times were. Do you by chance have any recollection or might there be something in the yearbook? I don't remember if he was actually part of the Track team or not,as I don't think he had much support from home for extra curricular activites.As it turns out, I have a 14 year old son who just recently competed at the Junior Olympics in Track & Field, and he placed 2nd in the 200 meter in the country and he runs the 100 Meter dash in 10.97 seconds, which was the best time of the year & 3/100ths of second from the all-time J/O record! I am putting this scrapbook together for my son and any little anecdote or story would be great. I have attached a photo of Blake - there is definitely a family resemblance :)

In Memoriam...

Some bad news, Darel Olson died last Tuesday. July 1. Apparently he was diabetic but he actually died from liver cancer. It sounds like he didn't last long after he was diagnosed. He lived in Port Orchard and had retired from Bremerton Ship Yard. As his classmate and friend Doug Palm puts it, if you are thinking of getting in touch with a friend, don't wait...you never know.

Washington Ferry Rides

Those of us that no longer live on the Puget Sound will especially appreciate this photo. How great it was to be on a relaxing ferry ride when the horizon rose and the sea jumped up to cover your car with cold, wind-driven saltwater. I remember it on the Guemes Ferry for sure.
