Brain Worcester

These are some pics taken last month during the Arts and Crafts Show. The good lookin' kid with me is my baby boy, Chad (now 38 years old). We were on some beach on San Juan Island. The two old dames on the couch with my granddaughter Alexis (Lexy) are my sisters, Suzy and Marcia.

Brian and Bill Baxter have been good friends since age 11.

This picture was taken in Las Vegas, where Bill lives now. I don't remember which restaurant they were at. I think this was taken in June. From left Brent Gilhousen, Sandra (King) Gilhousen, Bill Baxter, and Leilani Baxter. Brent and Sandra live in California and as I understand it Brent is trying to, at least, semi-retire. Bill is retired, but his wife still works as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines. I try to get down to see Bill about every 3 months.

Russ McGlenn

(The following is from our own Indiana Jones-McGlenn)

Oil is a Renewable Resource

by Russ McGlenn russmcglenn@juno.com

(In photos, Russ and Tricia McGlenn at their dinosaur dig in South Dakota.)

Oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico are being refilled with oil coming up from below the current oil fields. Russia has drilled over 400 eight mile deep wells into the Earth’s granite crust. This has worked so well that they worked in Vietnam and found oil off its coast where everyone said there was no oil. Oil used to be found in sedimentary rock at 2-3 miles deep, but the Russians found a new source.
What is happening? The Russians found that new oil was being made from hot molten rock called magma heating the basement rocks of the Earth’s crust. As the rocks are heated methane gas is distilled. This combines with carbonates and carbon 14 that occur naturally in rock, when these are mixed together, they form oil. It’s called Abiotc (non biological) because it does not come from vegetable matter.
The original theory of how oil was formed is that swamps filled with vegetation, (biomass) were covered with mud (called sedimentary rock once it hardened) and decayed over millions of years into coal or crude oil. This is called the Biotic Theory.
Oil is a renewable resource because it is being made today deep in the earth’s crust. We do not have an energy crisis we have a leadership crisis. One group says we are running out of energy so we have to cut back all that we do and will not allow us to drill for the new oil. This new group says we have plenty of oil, let us drill for it and use it. Write or call you congressmen and tell them your views. They are already feeling the heat from voters, keep the pressure on.
Here are articles about the Abiotic Oil:
Potential oil supply refill? Washington Times 5/29/02 Bruce Bartlett
On April 16, Newsday, the Long Island newspaper, published a startling report that old oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico were somehow being refilled. That is, new oil was being discovered in fields where it previously had not existed. (Excerpt) Read more at washtimes.com

Vietnam http://www.geoscience.co.uk/geofrc/geobaseasia.html
Ongoing exploration activities (initiated in the 1970's) have proved the existence of oil and gas in basement reservoirs [in the granite crust RM] in the offshore area of South Vietnam. This has resulted in the discovery of several oil and gas fields including White Tiger (Bach Ho), Dragon (Rong) and Rang Dong fields.

Darel Oson's Daughter and Grandson

PLEASE READ THIS NOTE AND SEND ANY RELEVANT ANECDOTES TO ME. d3dawson@gmail.com (or you can post a note directly on the blog.)

Hello Dwight, I am Darel's daughter, and coincidentally, I live outside of Houston in The Woodlands! I read your tribute to Dad on Rill's website and noticed you went to high school with him. I loved seeing his high school photo and saved it to my computer! I am trying to get some information for a scrapbook and wondered if you could help me. Before Dad became ill,we had a brief discussion about him running track in school and what some of his events/times were. Do you by chance have any recollection or might there be something in the yearbook? I don't remember if he was actually part of the Track team or not,as I don't think he had much support from home for extra curricular activites. As it turns out, I have a 14 year old son who just recently competed at the Junior Olympics in Track & Field, and he placed 2nd in the 200 meter in the country and he runs the 100 Meter dash in 10.97 seconds, which was the best time of the year & 3/100ths of second from the all-time J/O record! I am putting this scrapbook together for my son and any little anecdote or story would be great. I have attached a photo of Blake - there is definitely a family resemblance :)

Best Regards, Kimberly Olson Webb

Guns in School

Here is something you won't see in today's schools. Aren't you glad we were put at such risk?

In Memoriam...

Some bad news, Darel Olson died last Tuesday. July 1. Apparently he was diabetic but he actually died from liver cancer. It sounds like he didn't last long after he was diagnosed. He lived in Port Orchard and had retired from Bremerton Ship Yard. As his classmate and friend Doug Palm puts it, if you are thinking of getting in touch with a friend, don't wait...you never know.

Washington Ferry Rides

Those of us that no longer live on the Puget Sound will especially appreciate this photo. How great it was to be on a relaxing ferry ride when the horizon rose and the sea jumped up to cover your car with cold, wind-driven saltwater. I remember it on the Guemes Ferry for sure.

Jayne Carlson

Our classmate Jayne Carlson lives in Bellingham. She suffered a stroke in 2002 as a result of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. He broke her back in 3 places, lower, middle and neck area. She showed me the diagram. It was during subsequent back surgery that she had the stroke. Jayne lost the ability to speak but has retained great interest in the world around her. Her room at Alderwood Park reflects continuing interest in her AHS experience. The walls are covered with photos, documents and other memorabia. She enjoys visits and communicates well. Treat yourself and stop in for a few minutes. We went through the 1965 Annual and she pointed to pictures wanting to know about so many people. I have spoken with her sister Lynn in Virginia, and her independent caregiver Nancy; they have been very helpful in piecing things together for me. I think anything you have to say would be fine with her. She was excited to know that several of our classmates live in the Bellingham area, at least part of the year.

Keith Eide

Just a note to fellow Anacortes High School band members........Mr. Keith Eide's health is failing. I talked with him and his wife a few weeks ago and was quite saddened to see him this way. His wife told me that, unknown to him, the North Cascade Community Concert Band is performing a tribute concert to him. It will be April 13th at 3pm in the Broadniak Performing Arts Center (the high school auditorium). This is the concert band the he originally formed. He is quite frail and very hard of hearing and had to give up his love of conducting and finally playing his music. The music program will be Mr. Eide's favorite...Sousa marches. Hope to see some of you there.

$1,000,000

In 1962, when were Sophomores, the Seattle World's Fair wowed us. It required a trip to the "big city," then 500,000 people. The futuristic monorail and other Jetson-type displays were exciting and inspirational. I remember buying and creating an injected plastic momento, in blue. Seems like I may still have a stamped metal coin as well. The trip up the Space Needle was just 42 seconds and the view was like nothing we had seen before. Remember, if you stood in one place long enough you got a slow 360 degree view of the Seattle area.

Back on the ground, a display that I was drawn to was the 1,000,000 silver dollars. This was in the day when $20,000 could get you a very nice 4 bedroom home. I'm an optimist but I've always wondered if the plastic-faced 9'x9'x9' box was really full of dollars or if it was just a deceptive display. My money is on the latter.

Lucky 7's

7/7/07 was the lucky date for Dallas area Seahawk Trent Courtney as he celebrated his 60th. A surprise party at the family lake lot in central Texas was well attended by family and friends. The group photo shows some of his 10 grandchildren, his wife Judy, a son and a mother-in-law. Family is important for Trent. Also attending were Dwight and Candy Dawson from Houston.

Jackie's Story

Here is a picture of my son, John, that I gave up for adoption on May 2nd, 1965 (one of the saddest days of my life.). We have the best, all-time, feel-good story of an adopted child looking for his birth mother. I never thought this could happen. November 21, 2005, became one of the happiest days of my life when he came back to me and brought with him a beautiful wife and 2 terrific sons. They healed a very broken heart in one day and it is still a fairytale. I treasure every minute of it. This picture was taken 3 days later on Thanksgiving when John and his family came to Anacortes and met the entire family. A month later, on Christmas eve, we all went back to Anacortes, including his adoptive Dad and sister, also adopted. His sister's birth mother was also from Anacortes but is deceased. We are now one huge family.

Stay Connected

At least 10 of you must have new email addresses. The addresses I used recently bounced back as "undeliverable."

Please send email address changes to me so we can stay connected. Tell me about YOUR 60th birthday.

Cheers...
