Jayne Carlson

Our classmate Jayne Carlson lives in Bellingham. She suffered a stroke in 2002 as a result of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. He broke her back in 3 places, lower, middle and neck area. She showed me the diagram. It was during subsequent back surgery that she had the stroke. Jayne lost the ability to speak but has retained great interest in the world around her. Her room at Alderwood Park reflects continuing interest in her AHS experience. The walls are covered with photos, documents and other memorabia. She enjoys visits and communicates well. Treat yourself and stop in for a few minutes. We went through the 1965 Annual and she pointed to pictures wanting to know about so many people. I have spoken with her sister Lynn in Virginia, and her independent caregiver Nancy; they have been very helpful in piecing things together for me. I think anything you have to say would be fine with her. She was excited to know that several of our classmates live in the Bellingham area, at least part of the year.

Keith Eide

Just a note to fellow Anacortes High School band members........Mr. Keith Eide's health is failing. I talked with him and his wife a few weeks ago and was quite saddened to see him this way. His wife told me that, unknown to him, the North Cascade Community Concert Band is performing a tribute concert to him. It will be April 13th at 3pm in the Broadniak Performing Arts Center (the high school auditorium). This is the concert band the he originally formed. He is quite frail and very hard of hearing and had to give up his love of conducting and finally playing his music. The music program will be Mr. Eide's favorite...Sousa marches. Hope to see some of you there.

$1,000,000

In 1962, when were Sophomores, the Seattle World's Fair wowed us. It required a trip to the "big city," then 500,000 people. The futuristic monorail and other Jetson-type displays were exciting and inspirational. I remember buying and creating an injected plastic momento, in blue. Seems like I may still have a stamped metal coin as well. The trip up the Space Needle was just 42 seconds and the view was like nothing we had seen before. Remember, if you stood in one place long enough you got a slow 360 degree view of the Seattle area.

Back on the ground, a display that I was drawn to was the 1,000,000 silver dollars. This was in the day when $20,000 could get you a very nice 4 bedroom home. I'm an optimist but I've always wondered if the plastic-faced 9'x9'x9' box was really full of dollars or if it was just a deceptive display. My money is on the latter.

Lucky 7's

7/7/07 was the lucky date for Dallas area Seahawk Trent Courtney as he celebrated his 60th. A surprise party at the family lake lot in central Texas was well attended by family and friends. The group photo shows some of his 10 grandchildren, his wife Judy, a son and a mother-in-law. Family is important for Trent. Also attending were Dwight and Candy Dawson from Houston.

Jackie's Story

Here is a picture of my son, John, that I gave up for adoption on May 2nd, 1965 (one of the saddest days of my life.). We have the best, all-time, feel-good story of an adopted child looking for his birth mother. I never thought this could happen. November 21, 2005, became one of the happiest days of my life when he came back to me and brought with him a beautiful wife and 2 terrific sons. They healed a very broken heart in one day and it is still a fairytale. I treasure every minute of it. This picture was taken 3 days later on Thanksgiving when John and his family came to Anacortes and met the entire family. A month later, on Christmas eve, we all went back to Anacortes, including his adoptive Dad and sister, also adopted. His sister's birth mother was also from Anacortes but is deceased. We are now one huge family.

AHS REUNION

The Anacortes Schools Foundation would like your help spreading the news about the AHS All-Class Reunion to be held on Saturday, August 4, 2007 from 1:00-4:00 at the Anacortes High School.
The event will be similar to the Seahawk Centennial Celebration held last August commemorating the 100th anniversary of the high school. There will be media presentations of the history of the Anacortes High School, an area designated to meet your classmates and renew old friendships, food and refreshments.
Williams Gym will be set up to display photos, memorabilia, old Key Club scrapbooks and other high school memories. Each class will have the opportunity to display their reunion scrapbooks, photos, yearbook, and any other memories. Please contact Kris Lytton if you’d like to organize a display for your class and to reserve a table. Take this opportunity to show off your graduating class!

What is with all these people we know turning 60?! Haven't they heard that the Social Security Fund will be going dry soon?

The Birthday Girl in this case was Linda Spencer. She still refuses to grow up and joined in the spirited singing with Jane Wingert, Bill Jamerman and Linda Lemberg.

Turning 60

We knew it would come. But who can believe it has started? Amazing as it seems, most of our Class is turning 60 years old this year! Ed Storme is leading the way as his day was celebrated recently. Pat Fraser looks on with empathy. Over the Hill 40 looks pretty good now eh?

We learned recently that classmate Rick Weber is deceased some years ago. He had apparently been ill for a while and living in Seattle. No other details are available.

Holiday Dinner

What could be better than enjoying a pre-Christmas dinner with old (as in: from another time) pals? I guess you could ask Rod Dorland, Rick Figenshaw, Pat Fraser, Tim Walters, Rod Coyne or Ed Storme.

Bob Matson, the Mad Inventor

Bob Matson has surfaced in California. He's in Orange, near Disneyland with his wife Jeanne. They have two adult kids Erik (26) and Jacqueline (24). Bob got his PhD in Biochemistry from Wayne State University after receiving a BA and MS in Chemistry from Western. He works for Beckman Coulter, Inc. in Fullerton. They are a major supplier of the medical diagnositic equipment we Boomers will be needing (or are already using.) Bob was inducted into the firm's Inventors Hall of Fame recently with the latest of his 12 inventions. Most of these are related to "miniaturization and multiplexing of DNA and protein diagnostic assays in themicroarray field." He says that future applications include molecular medicine, genomics and proteomics. Got all that?

Way to go Bob!

Whidbey Island Drive in Houston

You see the strangest things around this city of 4 million people. You know there is a story behind this but one can only guess.
I found this tranquil street of 6 blocks or so in NW Houston not too far from the horse track. I was taking advantage of a "less than 90 degrees top-down day" in the MG.
